Growing up, I hated studying Chinese and even failed the language. Never in my life did I think I will be teaching my son the language but here we are..
What has helped me get started is having a curated selection of Chinese books with beautiful artwork and imaginative storytelling sent to my door. It makes what was a difficult language (for me) now seem fun and exciting, which is how I want my son to experience the language.
Could I borrow books from the library? Of course, and this is something I do regularly with English books. However my Chinese is rusty. I find it overwhelming to have to choose which books to get and also determine how age-appropriate they are.
Booklings removes that barrier so I can focus on enjoying reading to my boy. The books are gorgeously illustrated. The stories are evocative and spark wonder. They often feature themes like courage, kindness and acceptance that can help shape a young growing mind. I might be teaching my son Chinese but in truth, I’m the one that’s learning again. I have always enjoyed reading and this has helped me to rediscover joy and nostalgia in my Chinese roots.
I’m also in awe of the 2 mums that started Booklings because motherhood is so so hard, much less running a small business on top of that. It feels good to be able to support women who are helping the next generation connect to their cultural heritage.
Matrescence has been transformative in ways I did not expect. This newfound enthusiasm for Chinese is one of them. Kids have a way of changing your goals and priorities. No doubt this unexpected turn in the parenthood journey I embarked upon has been undertaken by many a mum (and dad) before me.
